Judicial Administration Specialization General Course Description
Fall Semester, 2009
CJ 812 Criminal Justice Management Seminar Preparing to Lead: Analyzing and Developing Organization and Personal Leadership. This course identifies the leadership and management demands confronting the courts in an increasingly more complex global and national environment, which requires systems thinking and approaches, collaboration both inside and outside of the courts, and competencies that exceed previous judicial administration practices. Leadership, management, and organizational theories are explored and applied to contemporary challenges and opportunities. At the conclusion of this course, students will have a foundation in organizational theory; be able to critically analyze their organizations using applicable theories and frames; clearly articulate their analysis findings; identify the skills and characteristics necessary for successful management and leadership; analyze their own management and leadership capabilities; develop a management and leadership personal enhancement plan; and apply what they have learned to the administration of justice. Students will engage with each other, the instructor, and the subject matter through readings, films, critical thinking, assessment and analysis, individual writings, and group discussions. A full syllabus will be available to students when classes begin.
This is an online course, which will offer students the opportunity to access the course materials at times that are best for them but still within the prescribed time periods. Interactions with other students and with the instructor will be online. Required readings will be announced.
